Located in the heart of this city, just below the Ridge. It is another best place to pass time while in this city. You will find myriad of shops, banks, post offices, tourists offices, clubs along with restaurants and cafes with their delicious delicacies. You will find books, jewellery, exclusive handicrafts, exquisite wooden works, woollen clothes.

2.Kali Bari Temple:

Open: 6.00 am to 7.00 pm daily.

Since its inception in 1845, this Kali Bari Temple is famous for spirituality, religion, architecture, scenic beauty. It is amongst the top places in this summer retreat to stay at night.

Town Hall is an architectural marvel.

3.Gaiety Theatre:

Open: 9.00 am to 5.00 pm (Monday to Friday).

Entry fee: INR 10 for Indians. INR 25 for foreigners.

It is a century-old beautiful heritage theatre with imposing Victorian-style architecture. Although the original building is partly demolished, still the remaining part is a grand visual treat. Now, there is an amphitheatre, an exhibition hall, an art gallery and a multipurpose hall.

4.Town Hall:

It is another notable building of this city. This half-timbered old town hall was built in 1910.

5.Scandal Point:

Scandal Point joins the Mall Road to the Ridge on the west end of this city. Here you will find a statue of the famous freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai and General Post Office of Shimla.

6.Lakkar Bazar:

Open: 9.00 am to 7.00 pm.

The time required: 1-2 hours.

It is one of the biggest street shopping destinations in India famous for wooden decorative items and toys, roller skating hall, Meena bazaar, souvenirs, walking sticks, woollen garments, etc.

7.The Ridge:

Famous for: Nature, photography, shopping.

Open: all days from 8 am to 6 pm.

Entry fee: Nil.

The time required: 2-3 hours.

Visit Christ Church, Tudor Library, Lakkar Bazar.

It is one of the best places to enjoy. Besides, it is a wide-open street beside the mall road. It is mainly a shopping hub.

You will find numerous shops, boutiques cafes, restaurants and bars. You will get exclusive local artefacts. Moreover, you can see the spectacular beauty of the snow-clad seven majestic hills from here.  Added to this is the lush green pine, oak, rhododendron, pine, etc. in the surroundings.

It is a perfect place for photography. It connects Mall Road to the famous wooden crafts market Lakkar Bazar in the east and Scandal Point on the west as it runs on the side of Mall Road from east to west. Moreover, different fairs, as well as government functions, are held here. The five-day summer festival either in April or in May is an eye delight with folk dances, Himachali film festival, flower shows, ice skating festival and food festival.

It is a vehicle-free zone.

8.Christ Church:

The time required: About 30 minutes.

This is the second oldest church in Northern India and situated on the Ridge. The Neo-Gothic style of this church is an architectural splendour. The brass plaques coloured window glasses are also striking. stained glass windows inside represent hope, faith, humanity, patience, charity and fortitude.

9.Ice Skating Rink:

It also holds natural ice skating rink in Lakkar Bazar area. In fact, it is the largest in South Asia. It charges INR 200 per person/ per hour. It delivers an awesome thrilling experience. Apart from this, ice hockey organized by Shimla Ice Hockey Club and annual carnival by Ice Skating Club is also a crowd puller.

Enjoy strolling the Mall Road and the Ridge and see all the above attractions.

10.Gorton Castle:

Famous for: Architecture, photography.

Open: From 9.00 am to 5 pm.

The time required: 30 minutes.

It is about ½ km away from Kali bari temple towards state museum. It is another classic example of gothic style architecture along with Rajasthani Jallis.

May also visit St. Michael’s Cathedral Catholic Church, Bantony Castle, Kaila forest, Kamana Devi temple, Rani Jhansi park.

11.Hawa Ghar, Shimla:

Open: 9 am to 6 pm.

Entry fee: INR 10 for adults and INR 5 for children.

It is another fascinating place near the Ridge. If you have time, then you can visit it.

12.Jakhoo Hills, Shimla:

Famous for: Religion, tranquillity, nature, photography.

Time: 6.00 am to 11.00 am and 4.00 pm to 8.00 pm, all days.

Entry fee: Nil.

The time required:1-2 hours.

Only 2 km away from the city, it is nestled at a height of 8000 ft. It is the highest peak in the city. At the top of the hill is a popular temple of a Hindu deity, Lord Hanuman. At an elevation of 8500 feet (2591 meters), the 108 feet (33 meters) tall statue of Lord Hanuman is amongst the highest altitude masterpieces in the world. It is seen from almost everywhere in the city.  It not only offers a mystical vibe but also offers a picturesque landscape amidst a blanket of alpine woods. From here, you can see the snow-covered Shivalik range.

From here, you can enjoy sunrise and sunset.

13.Jakhu Ropeway:

This is the first ropeway in Shimla which connects Jakhu temple and the ridge ground. This 8 km ride will take 5 minutes. You will experience jaw-dropping scenic vistas from here.

The ropeway ride time is 9.30 am to 6.00 pm (until sunset).

The ticket cost is INR 200 for children between 3-12 years and INR 250 for the adults.

14.Rothney Castle, Shimla:

Only 700 meters from Jakhoo hills, this architectural marvel was the house of famous political reformer and ornithologist Allen Octavian Hume. It is another major tourist’s attraction for its astonishing backdrops and lush green landscape.

15.Johnnie’s wax museum, Shimla:

Open: 10.00 am to 10.00 pm. Daily.

Entry fee: INR 250 per person, children below 5 years free.

If time permits, then you can visit it. It is also popular as the Madame Tussauds Museum. You will find wax statues with various known personalities as well as some fictional characters.

16.Sankat Mochan Temple, Shimla:

Open: 6.30 am to 8.00 pm in Summer and 7.00 am to 6.30 pm in winter.

Situated 7.3 km from the town, it is a highly regarded temple after Jakhu temple.

17.Kamana Devi Temple, Shimla:

Famous for: Religious, nature, photography.

Open 24 hours.

It is another highly prestigious religious place on the Prospect hill. The main deity is Kamana Devi, an incarnation of Goddess Kali. The surrounding green meadows dotted with several water bodies and amazing valleys offer picturesque vistas.

This Prospect hill is a wonderful place near the city.

It is 4.5 km away and it takes 13 minutes.

18.Shimla State Museum:

Famous for: Nature, adventure, photography.

Open: 10.00 am to 5.00 pm (Monday closed).

Entry fee:

For Indians: INR 20 + INR 50 for photography.

For foreigners: INR 100 + INR 100 for photography.

The time required: 1-2 hours.

Situated at the top of Mount Pleasant, it is the centre for preserving the cultural heritage of the golden past. The colonial type building along with amazing lawns are eye captivating. You will find stunning collections of rich art, archaeology and cultural anthropology. Further, it houses classic collections of paintings, dolls, weapons, armours, coins, sculptures, handicrafts, etc.

You can enroute visit the Mall road. If you walk through Kali Bari Road and Mall Road from Shimla, it is only 2.3 km away and requires 32 minutes’ walk only. Scandal Point is 3 km away from here.

19.Himalayan bird park, Shimla:

Open: 10.00 am to 5.00 pm

Entry Fee: INR 10 per person.

The time required: 1 hour.

It is only 2.8 km from the city and will take 9 minutes to reach there. It falls between the state museum and the vice-regal lodge. Moreover, it is only 400 meters away from the State Museum. You will find some general as well as several exotic and rare species of birds along with plants and trees in this no-frills aviary.

20.Indian Institute of Advanced Study or Rashtrapati Niwas or Vice Regal Lodge Shimla:

Famous for: History, architecture, nature, photography, science.

Entry Fee: INR 20 for Indians.

INR 50 for foreigners.

INR 20 more for Garden Visit.

Open: 9.30 am to 4.50 pm. (Monday closed).

The time required: Around 1 hour.

It is only 3.4 km from the city and needs 10 minutes to reach. Besides, it is only 1 km away from Shimla State Museum and takes 4 minutes to reach.

Situated on the Observatory Hill, this Victorian-style architecture is a majestic structure. It served as the summer residence of the Indian Viceroy. It is a history as well as architectural buffs with this Mock-Tudor mansion along with an impeccably maintained garden. British Government used it for major political meetings.

Now it is an educational centre. Post-doctoral courses are studied here.

From the top of the Observatory Lodge, you can view the fascinating sights of the surrounding scenery. It is the second-highest point of this city.

21.Summer Hill, Shimla:

It is 5.6 km away from the city and it takes only 18 minutes. Moreover, it is only 3.3 km away from the Viceregal Lodge and requires only 10 minutes. This quaint hamlet is just at the outskirts of the city. This is also popular as potters’ Hill because the potters made clay pots here. Perched at a height of 1283 meter, it offers scintillating beauty of the valley along with surrounding greenery. It is also a part of the cluster of seven hills.

22.Chadwick Falls, Shimla:

This waterfall is falling from a height of 86 meters and cascading down a huge gorge. Snuggled within the glen forest of deodar and pine it is enticing particularly in the monsoon months while the water level increases.

23.Annadale, Shimla:

Famous for: Golf course, nature, adventure, photography:

Entry fee: Nil.

Open: Army Museum 10.00 am to 2.00 pm and 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm (Monday close).

The time required: 1-2 hours.

It is 3.6 km from the city and takes only 16 minutes to reach. It is another good place to visit here. Although the British played cricket and polo and horse race in this flat terrain, now it is a golf course. It may also be used as a helipad.

You can hike either to the Glen or Annadale peak.

You can also visit nearby gardens, cactus museum and army museum.

24.Tara Devi Temple, Shimla:

From the city, it is 18.8 km and takes around 39 minutes. Situated atop Tara Parbat this religious shrine is almost 250 years old. The presiding deity is Goddess Tara, one of the nine sisters of ‘Maa Durga’. If you can arrange a time, they can visit this temple.

25.Water Catchment wildlife sanctuary, Shimla:

It is only 7 km away from the city and takes 20 minutes to reach. From here Mashroba is 4.2 km and will take 9 minutes. Due to the intriguing diversity of flora and fauna, this 1000 acres’ sanctuary is a worth visit. You can see various snakes along with pythons. Moreover, you can expect to spot blue magpies, ghorals, foxes, house sparrows, etc.

26.Shimla reserve forest sanctuary:

Famous for: wild lives, adventure, nature, photography.

Open: 9.00 am to 6.00 pm.

Entry fee: INR 25 per person, Students with I-cards INR 10, INR 150 per vehicle, INR 100 for two-wheelers, INR 50 for steel camera.

It is 14.3 km away from the city and it needs 41 minutes to reach. This is another oft-visited place in Shimla. Diversity of flora and fauna is amazing. Generally, tourists spot monkeys, leopards, barking deer, bear, jackals, etc. It offers wonderful views of the grand Himalayan snow-clad peaks such as Bandar Poonch, Chota Shali, Rakta Dhar, Deo Tibba and even the Pir Panjal ranges.

27.Mashobra, Shimla:

Famous for: Nature, adventure sport, photography.

The time required: Half or full-day depends upon tourist’s activities.

It is another sought-after tourist destination on the way to Kufri just 7.2 km before Kufri. This hamlet is only 10.4 km from the city and takes 28 minutes to reach. The enchanting beauty is due to cool ambience abundant greenery and serenity. It is home to misty hills. Besides, sparkling stream gushing down the verdant valley full of towering oak, pine and cedar.

It is also heaven to the adventurists with paragliding, hiking, rappelling, quad biking and skiing.

In winter with a glistering blanket of snow, it attracts the snow lovers along with the adventurists.

28.Kufri, Shimla:

It is 14.4 km away from this city and takes 42 minutes to reach there. It is an oft-visited place of here. This scenic hamlet is a heaven to the honeymooners. Situated at a height of 2510 meters (8600 feet), it is a paradise to the nature lovers as well as the adventurists.

Due to regular snowfall, it is the top attraction of Shimla in the winter season. Furthermore, it is well-known as India’s winter sports capital.

29.The Mahasu Peak in Kufri. (The topmost Peak)

You can reach there only by horse/mule. It charges INR 650 per person. In a clear day, breathtakingly beautiful Badrinath, as well as Kedarnath ranges, are visible from here. It is quite safe. There is a muddy road that you can hike. But the horses traversing making it almost impossible. From there, you can see the abundance vistas of snow-clad splendid Himalayan peaks fenced by lush greenery. Moreover, there is a Nag Temple.

30.Kufri Fun World:

Nestled at a height of 2800 meters, with snowy Himalayan peaks in the background, it is one of the high altitude amusement parks in the world. You will find here the world’s highest go-kart track.

During the winter season, tourists can enjoy the adventurous skiing along with the thrilling beauty of snow all over. Skiing charge is INR 300 per person/per hour.

31.Horse ride in Kufri:

33.Hip Hip Hurry Amusement Park, Kufri:

This unique amusement park offers various amusement activities like rowing and valley crossing, rock climbing, Burma bridge, bumping boats, flying fox, commando net, etc.

Added to this, in winter indulge in a boat on the snow-laden terrain and ice skating. Also, enjoy the telescoping views.

34.Green Valley, Shimla:

Green valley is another popular attraction near Kufri for its scenic ambience. Surrounded by lush green hills, this natural dale area also earned fame as a Bollywood shooting spot. This area oozes with abundant splendid natural magnificence. The stunning beauty of Lush green carpets comprising of pine and deodar all around will simply spellbind you. Added to this is the mighty, snowy Himalayan peaks at the backdrop. You can discover nature in all its grandeur.

35.Chharabara, Shimla:

Nestled at a height of 8250 feet (2514 meter), this tiny hamlet is the summer retreat of President of India as well as the summer residence of the Governor of Punjab. It is around 18.2 km from this city on the way to Mashobra and Kufri. The tranquil village is covered by evergreen pine forest. Moreover, the mighty Pir Panjal Range, Deo Tibba, Chota Sahil and Sahil, Bandar Poonch, Rakt Dhar and Badrinath peaks are visible from here.

Furthermore, it is the part of the catchment area for the Yamuna and the Satluj rivers. Besides, it is rich in flora and fauna as it is a part of Shimla Reserve Forest sanctuary.

It is 45.3 km from Shimla and it will take about 1 hour and 50 minutes to reach there.

It is a tiny hamlet outside the city hustle and bustle and famous for its serenity and panoramic vistas. World’s highest cricket ground is here. You can see the verdant meadows covered by dense deodar and pine along with the stunning mountain glory. All these add to the charm of Chail.
